At its core, Durga Puja celebrates the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura. More broadly, it is a powerful celebration of Shakti, the divine feminine energy that represents power, creation, and protection. In Bengali tradition, Durga Puja is also seen as the annual homecoming of Goddess Durga to her parental abode on Earth, accompanied by her children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya). The pandals themselves are often elaborate and creatively themed, showcasing contemporary social issues, mythological stories, or replicas of famous monuments. The festival also features traditional music (like the rhythmic dhak drumming), dance forms (dhunuchi naach), and theatrical performances, making it a grand exhibition of cultural heritage and artistic expression.
